Know When To Seek Fertility Treatments

Fertility tip number one question is when to seek fertility treatments. We all know that wanting to become pregnant and actually being pregnant are two different things. Many women suffer from infertility. The good news is that many of these women can find treatments to correct their infertility issues.

Fertility Tip:  When to seek the treatments is the number one question

The answer to this question depends upon your age and your physician. If you take control of the situation before you even start trying to conceive and get a check up from your doctor
(preferably an obstetrician). This will get you established and ready to take steps necessary should infertility problems arise. Ask them about their protocol for a timeline to conceive and what measures they take to correct issues.

obgyn By starting off with a good check-up with your ob doctor you put yourself on a better start to conception. Of course you can become pregnant without ever seeing a doctor first. Ideally it’s best to get that physical check-up prior to trying to rule out any issues from the beginning.

So how do you know if you need to seek fertility treatments?

The best fertility tips is that charting all your fertility signs of basal body temperature, cervical fluid and cervical position will give you an accurate view of how your reproductive cycle is doing. Potential problems or infertility issues can be seen from fertility charts. Issues such as anovulation, high or low estrogen, high or low progesterone and thyroid problems can be discovered on a fertility chart.

Let’s talk about your age. If you are under 35 years more than likely your doctor won’t even begin any type of fertility testing or treatments until you have tried to conceive for at least one year.  If you approach your doctor armed with your fertility charts, you might could begin treatment at 3 to 6 months if you suspect a problem. If you are over 35 and under 40 your doctor will probably want you to try for 6 months. If you are over 40, you can probably start tests and treatments after 3 months of trying.

When considering fertility testing, keep in mind that about 50% of infertility can be male factor. So it’s important to bring him in for fertility testing too. His tests are fairly simple to perform. A semen specimen is obtained and his sperm count is done.

Unfortunately for you, the fertility testing is a bit more invasive.  This is why a man’s work-up should be done first – to rule it out.  Then tests can be preformed on you. Tests and treatments vary from doctor to doctor.

Fertility Tip:  Your fertility work up will usually begin with fertility charts.

This is why it’s so important to start off doing them from the beginning. Then normally this is what could be checked first:

  • Cervical fluid checked for ferning patterns which are an indication of ovulation.
  • Endometrial Biopsy
  • Hormone levels checked at various times through the cycle.
  • Hysterosalpinogram
  • Postcoital tests preformed to determine if the cervical fluid is friendly to the sperm.
  • UltrasoundsThen if these don’t pan out – more invasive measures such as:
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Laparoscopy

Also genetic counseling may be done to rule out possible genetic defects. Once the doctor gains a conclusion from these tests treatments can be given to help correct the infertility.

Normally an obstetrician will run most of these tests to see if the infertility issue can be corrected easily. If they find that the tests indicate nothing (with no conception occurring) or if they find a major infertility problem they may refer you to a reproductive endocrinologist or fertility specialist. These special doctors are better equipped to do more extensive and aggressive testing and treatments.

The number one fertility tip for this is to start off charting your fertility signs. This gives you a leg up should you encounter problems and help to possibly pinpoint where the issue lies. Once the problem is  identified, and treatment prescribed – hopefully pregnancy will be the result!
