Signs of Early Pregnancy

You might be pregnant if you have any of these signs of early pregnancy:Missed period – If your period is over-due by even a day, especially if you are regular, this is one of the sure-fire signs of early pregnancy. In days past you needed to be at least one day late for a home pregnancy test to show a positive. These days however the home pregnancy tests are a lot more accurate and sensitive and can detect pregnancy many days before the menstrual cycle is due.

Spotting around 1 week after ovulation – This spotting can occur as early as five days after ovulation or as late as 12 days after. This can be due to 2 reasons, one being implantation spotting. This occurs when the fertilized egg burrows into the thick uterine lining and sometimes can cause a bit of bleeding. Another reason for the spotting could be because of a surge of estrogen or a drop in progesterone when the cycle comes to an end, just prior to the corpus luteum continuing to take over the production of progesterone, there may be a slight drop in temperature and this drop can cause a bit of spotting, before the body actually realizes it’s pregnant.

Extreme fatigue – This happens as a result of the pregnancy hormones coming into play. Fatigue usually prevails all through pregnancy, but it’s especially prevalent in early pregnancy.

Food aversions – If you suddenly find your normally favorite foods making your stomach turn, this is a food aversion.  This is cause from pregnancy hormones.

Food cravings – Same thing as the aversions, the hormones can cause cravings for foods that you normally don’t care for.

Nausea – Also caused from those lovely pregnancy hormones. Nausea often turns into full-blown morning sickness and can be accompanied with vomiting.

Blue veins in the breasts – This normally occur at around 6 to 8 weeks, but can be seen earlier. This happens as a result of the breasts preparing to make milk for the new baby.

Bloating in the abdomen – Some women are lucky and won’t have this – some will bloat well before their cycle is missed.  This is due to hormones and water weight. This has often been one of my first signs of pregnancy.

Frequent urination – The swollen uterus can put pressure on the bladder and cause those frequent runs to the bathroom. Normally you will experience this at night as well, having to get up to urinate more often than before.

Hot flashes – Because the increased production of the hormone progesterone you may experience hot flashes throughout the entire pregnancy.

Weepiness – Pregnancy hormones can play a role in causing weepiness for the simplest reasons. You may find yourself  crying at those cute little baby commercials on TV or over the silliest things.

Fainting spells – It’s normal to feel faint due to the increase in blood volume during pregnancy. Feeling woozy and fainting can occur early on. Many TV shows have fainting spells as one of the signs of early pregnancy.

Dizziness – Same as with fainting, feeling dizzy can be a sign of early pregnancy. Dizzy, nausea – it all goes hand in hand.

Cervix that’s soft, high and closed – If you chart this sign, you may note this observance. The cervix may or may not do this early on, but it will definitely do this by around 6 weeks.

Triphasic temperatures – if you chart your basal body temperature you might notice a third level of temperatures when the fertilized egg implants. This may or may not happen in with the signs of early pregnancy. Each pregnancy is different.
